FAEMSE News Release
Bill Shearer Named Florida EMS Educator of the Year - 1998
The Florida Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council recognized Bill Shearer as the state's top educator at this year's ClinCon. John "Bill" Shearer began his affiliation with Sarasota County Technical Institute in 1980. Initially, he taught an EMT program and then went on to teach the paramedic program as well. During this time, Bill has successfully undertaken numerous challenges.
Examples of his accomplishments include the initiation of a monthly on-going formal continuing education program for all EMS personnel in Sarasota County. He not only created monthly modules for updating and review, he developed monthly written and practical examinations to determine and validate the competency of every EMS caregiver. Bill also developed and implemented an externship program that allows every paramedic in Sarasota County to return to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for updating IV and intubation skills. Together with Chief Brian Gorski and Dr. Linda Swisher, Bill developed a formal preceptorship program for paramedic students and new paramedic employees that incorporate the use of "trained" preceptors. This program is so successful that Bill is now training preceptors throughout the state.
Additionally, Bill coordinates all CPR, ACLS, BTLS, and PALS programs and serves as a coordinator for the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing team. He is an affiliate faculty for the American Heart Association and has established Sarasota County Technical Institute as a training center under the new guidelines.
These accomplishments would be significant under any circumstances, but what's amazing about these achievements is that Bill works full time for Sarasota County Fire Rescue and manages to dedicate 30-40 teaching hours per week to the school. Bill's dedication and accomplishments exemplify the spirit of the Florida EMS Educators of the Year award.
Editor's Note: Please join us in celebrating Bill's accomplishments and honor him, as he is an example of the many fine EMS educators within our state.
